It took me years longer than it should have to open this book, but once I did, I fell so in love with it. It's wonderful. Smart, emotional, fanciful and at the same time grounded in real-world ideas. The writing moves between being transparent--letting the reader cruise forward in plot--and then growing surprising on its own terms; a single sentence will step forward, and for me, at least, catch my eye, a reminder to enjoy the language word by word.

So fun.

(Also, I can't help but have a fondness for work set in the old Portland, the city Portland was before it gained a veneer of hipness.)
