Beautiful. Both simple and complex, if that makes any sense. Definitely a new writer to watch. Reminds me a little of the writing in Zarr's first book. More like 4 1/2 stars, but I'm rounding up. I love how the gay character is just a character, and not at all an "issue" in this book. The author is gay, and she did an excellent job with that part of it. I see this book's biggest strength as showing just how profoundly different what you see on the outside of a person and what's going on on the inside can be. People show what they want or need to, and that's all we get to see, and sometimes what's on the inside is just too painful to move to the outside. I see myself pretty much as an open book at this point, but I guess that wasn't always the case, and a teen in as much pain as Ingrid was probably wouldn't have been able to discuss most of it even with the person she was closest to. Sad, true, and the expert handling of all of this makes for very compelling reading. I realize that everybody has a different reaction to the suicide of someone who's close to them, but this definitely has the potential to help young people with processing that kind of a tragedy of their own. I love all of the talk about photography, too. There's an excellent trailer on YouTube and the author's website, if you want a little taste of this: book trailer
