This book has an amazing core of humor, but it's a very cynical humor -- sometimes painfully so. The good thing is that the painfulness reveals a sense of humanity that, especially at first, I thought might elude the main character. The bad thing is that, well, it's painful. Still, this book is absolutely worth reading. It's hilarious (especially for well-read people who aren't afraid to poke a bit of fun at "literature" and pop culture) and there are some tremendous passages.
