As commonsense as educational reform gets, Hirsch continues his quest to get American schools back to teaching content at the elementary level rather than disconnected skills and "projects-based" learning. A great critique of the college of education establishment, which I graduated from but reject much of its anti-curriculum message.

Hirsch defends the basic psychological science that to read well one has to know what he/she is reading. In order to know things, someone must betaught it at home or in school. And in order to participate in the public sphere, all citizens must be speaking the same language and using the same basic knowledge about the nation.
