Elijah's review
Crisis on Infinite Earths by Marv Wolfman
I had to do my dork homework and finally read this. Important, and fun at times, but also a perfect example of WHY this event had to happen... shit's so convoluted, confused, and quite a bit behind where most other comics were by 1985 in many ways that it feels kinda like an enjoyable antique. Maybe it just didn't age too well, I dunno. Still fun though, in its way.
Well, at the time it was awesome, but how much of what Crisis accomplished is still valid? 1% ? If we're lucky?
I bet it was awesome at the time, but I was purely a Marvel man up until recently. And I have to say, even based on what others were doing in '85, the characters are still not written too well... but I guess when they're as crazy convoluted as they were by then it was hard to really write them as realistic people. All in all, I do think Crisis was clearly needed though. DC continuity was such a clusterfuck at the time. I like their current status quo, though: "Look back, take what you want, ignore what you don't." Always a healthy way to go.
DC has always had a better grasp on wider-scope, cosmic stories, and that's what I tend to enjoy.Of course, Marvel continuity has its share of problems: Magneto, Mary Jane Watson, Avengers Disassembled, need I go on? :)
Oh of course Marvel's continuity is a fucking quagmire and a half, what I like is that they usually just go "yep, that doesn't make sense, here's a shitty quick fix, now let's move on" and that's that. But yes, DC can certainly do the cosmic thing, which is why I've just recently become obsessed with Green Lantern.
