An absolutely wonderful memoir; it might be my favorite yet. At once hilarious, reflective and Scripture/Talmud, Jacobs struggles and learns about the laws of the Bible for a year--from the obvious to the more obscure--often at the scoffing of his wife, family and the rest of NY City. I first heard about it on TED.com (I listened to his very pared down 20 minute talk), I derive my personal definition of faith and spirituality from it/him, and was also turned on to Jeffersonian interpretation and that of Red Letter Christians.
