I've been exploring a lot of new-to-me authors for the past several months, and Barbara Delinsky is one whom I had never read before. I was pleased to find that I really enjoy her writing. I started reading "The Secret Between Us" late last night and had it finished by the same time tonight; I would have read it straight through if I'd been able to keep my eyes open any longer last night. As the book begins, Deborah and her daughter Grace are driving home late one rainy night and hit a man jogging in the street, never seeing him until the point of impact. 15-year-old Grace is in the driver's seat, but Deborah makes an on-the-spot decision not to mention this to the officer who reports to the scene, who in turn assumes that it was Deborah who was driving. This mother-daughter secret threatens to tear their lives apart, but ultimately becomes the catalyst for repairing old family tensions between Deborah, her ex-husband, their son and daughter, Deborah's sister Jill, and their widowed father. This isn't some sappy romance - rather, it is a realistic portrayal of divorce, family, honesty and lack thereof, guilt, trust, the pressure to be "perfect" and follow the paths our parents expect of us, and life within a small-town, upper-middle-class community. 5 stars, because I really enjoyed this one.
