The people of Ember have made it out of their dying underground city. But now, faced with the prospect of life aboveground after living their whole lives without ever seeing the sun, they are practically helpless. When they stumble across the village of Sparks, they are relieved, and at first, the people of Sparks offer them shelter and food and aid. But as the weeks grow longer and it becomes clear that the people of Ember can’t fend for themselves and aren’t leaving any time soon, tempers begin to flare, and things begin to get really ugly.
This is the kind of post-apocalyptic novel that I should really like. And it is very ambitious to write a middle grade post-apocalyptic trilogy. But much like The City of Ember, The People of Sparks is an okay, really solid middle grade novel. It’s exceedingly middle grade.
