Kadare is so cunning that he can claim in front of the West that this book reprensents his unswerving fury to the past regime, though it's in fact an inferior imitation of Kafka. Most anti-totalitarian fictions have something to do with the Castle. The talent to find a relatively new angle or to expose some philosophical meaning determines the book's value. I don't think Kadare managed to do this in the case, nevertheless it reminds me of Andric's Bridge, in which a dark, infinite historical Balkan background may be conceived, beneath a very loosely composed plot surrounding the characters whose images are not clear.
