I spent most of the book thinking about what an entitled prick Eggers' character (and, thus, Eggers himself) comes across as in the story. At the same time, I found some parts of the character to which I could relate. This love/hate (mostly hate) feeling toward that character probably detracted somewhat from my overall take-away from the story, but I still appreciated it as an exploration into the tension between following your dreams and tending to your family and history. In the end, Eggers' character was too narcissistic to do either particularly well, but the exploration was worthwhile nonetheless.
