Ann's review
Disgrace (Penguin Essential Edition) by J.M. Coetzee
I thought Disgrace was an engrossing book. I immersed myself in it, and finished it quickly. It left me slightly depressed, which means it's a good book. Whenever a book affects me emotionally, the author has done well. The story was almost too bleak, though. It's about a professor who's professional life is ruined by an affair with a student. He goes back to Africa, where he was born, and stays with his daughter, who has problems, but is very pragmatic. There was nothing happpy about this book. But I still think it's worthwhile. I liked it better than Coetzee's "Slow Man" but not nearly as much as "Youth."
