Lucid and picturesque account of just what it says--an episode in the life of a landscape painter: something bad happens to a landscape painter; he survives and paints some more. The depictions of the Andean Cordillera and the pampas of Argentina are bleak yet vivid, and the story brings many details into view, dense with potential significance. But the narrator's occasional self-conscious efforts to articulate how some elements of the story fit into an ars poetica or something greater than the story itself don't quite persuade. It's a near miss at greatness.
