it was amazing
bookshelves: 2009, british, historical-fiction, read-in-2010
Read in January, 2010

Being the Booker prize winner, I expected this to be flawlessly written and finely crafted, of course--and it really, really is--but I was surprised by how much of a page-turner it turned out to be. Sometimes with Serious Fiction, I can appreciate the quality of the writing, while at the same time not exactly enjoying the experience of reading it. But this, while sober and weighty and probably not what I'd choose for reading on a beach vacation with an umbrella drink in my hand, is by no means a slog. Truly fine writing, and a rollicking story too. I've read Mantel is working on a sequel, so I won't complain about the lack of what I consider a proper ending.
