best thing I learned from this book: the bargaining method. Around 3, my son really started to develop his need for his own choices and this can be encouraged by using the bargaining method. I need him to brush his teeth, he wants to read books so:

We can read 4 books after you brush your teeth.

Its all about finding out what they want from you, to get what you want from them. Then kids feel like they are getting what they want and you feel like you're getting what you want. Win-win and encourages independent thinking and making decisions/compromises. I love that!
