I read this book as a child, but my recollections of the story were vague. The only thing I really remembered was that a girl lived alone on an island. This much can be known from reading the back cover, which is why I decided to read the book again. I'm so glad I did. The story of Karana would be entertaining if it were based on pure imagination alone, but knowing that the author based the story on real-life events makes it nothing short of inspirational.
