I've been a big Elmore Leonard fan for a long time, so I was surprised by my tepid response to this. Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe he just had an off game; but this book never quite seemed to be about anything. I mean, it's kind of about a Federal Marshal who could be unfaithful to his wife but chooses not to, while choosing to be unfaithful to his job; and in a very vague way it's kind of about what masculinity and femininity in the USA were coming to mean at the time that the USA was coming to be a world power...or something.

There are some very intriguing characters, and the title character knows some great jokes, and some sort of interesting things happen, but really the narrative never quite comes together to be a story.
