This is a very good book, but you need to be aware of what you're getting into before picking it up. This is 608 pages, translated from the original Japanese. The premise is that 42 Junior High Students (21 males, 21 females), all age 15, are kidnapped from a school field trip and transported by the government to an island. The inhabitants have been removed so that only a few soldiers remain on the island and the students. The students are then informed that they have been choosen for this year's program. The program is a government sponosered test where the kids have to kill each other. Each kid is given a daypack with bread, water, and a random weapon in it. (Weapons are random, from an Uzi automatic gun to non-weapon like a banjo.) They leave in two minute intrevels and from the moment they leave - the game is on. They are wearing collars that will explode if they try to take them off, or if they go into a forbidden zone. Each kid is given a map. Every 6 hours an island wide announcement is made detailing who died recently and which grids (and at what times) will be forbidden zones. A ship is stationed on all four sides of the island to prevent anyone from trying to escape. Last kid left alive is the sole survivor and wins. The program has supposidly thought of every condition possible to prevent escape and force the kids to kill each other. The forbidden zones force the players to move and reduce the size of the playing area.

It can be pretty brutal how many of the kids are killed. The descriptions are gorey. That being said, it is usually over in a couple paragraphs and you move on. With 600 pages, it goes into alot of detail. The story is told mainly from one person's point of view, but it will switch around and you'll hear from nearly everyone's point of view at least once as you learn their personal story. As soon as you really know alot about someone, they will probably end up dead. The first time someone is mentioned in a chapter, it'll say (Male Student No. 6) behind their name, to make it easier to keep track of who is who. There is a list in the front of the book, with the names of each student (21 of each sex). There is also a map of the island, with grid lines on it, and a list of what zones become forbidden zones and at what times. At the end of each chapter, it'll say ..."42 students remaining." So it isn't very hard to keep track of the various kids, even if they do all have japanese names.

Most of the gorey death scenes could be skimmed over. All you really need to know is if they are dead or not and move on. The storyline is what holds your interest.

Lissa1229 I seen the movie (via the web) and wanted to read this after reading hunger games.

ஐ Briansgirl (Book Sale Queen)ஐ I havn't found the movie, but the book is good. Bit gorey as each kid meets his end, but at least the descriptions are over quickly.

Lissa1229 The movie is gorey too but if you've seen bad horror movies from the 70's nothing too bad! I thought the movie was banned here (US)?

ஐ Briansgirl (Book Sale Queen)ஐ According to the introduction to the book by an american author, the movie isn't exactly banned here, it was just never imported here. So you have to find a copy elsewhere if you wish to see it.
