Katie's review
I Was a Rat! by Philip Pullman
Pullman is a genius. The story reads as an allegory - this could be Everyman. It’s social commentary in the form of children’s literature, and it’s brilliant. My favorite chapter was A Philosophical Investigation, which was such a clever statement about freedom of thought that it could have been placed right next to 1984. And the best part is the ending — I can’t tell you, of course. I can’t even hint. But I literally laughed out loud when the realization hit me. And I’m still tickled by it this morning.
It’s a fast read, since it’s a kid’s book. I read 45 pages on a 20-minute Metro ride, another 45 over lunch, another 45 on the Metro ride home, and the remaining 30 over Swiss Miss in bed.
