This coming of age story is told from the perspective of 12 year old Calpurnia Tate whose penchant for science and discovery set her apart from other girls her age. The brilliancy of this book is in the parallels between Calpurnia's struggle to find out her place in the world and the changing century where telephones and automobiles are just coming into her small town in Texas. This would be a great read for fans of Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie or even readers of the Penderwicks.
