Dr. James Asher is a don at Oxford who once played the Great Game for Queen and Country. Now he tutors in philology, married to the love of his life. One evening, he returns home to a cold house, where the servants and his wife lie in unnatural comas, the result of mind control by a master vampire, Don Simon di Ysidro, a former grandee who came to London with King Phillip to woo the Virgin Queen. Ysidro seeks Asher's help to find out is killing the vampires of London. Before he knows it, Asher is pursuing vampires all over London and is attacked by vampires in Paris before he comes face-to-face with the horror that is stalking London. Asher must learn the ways of vampires and figure out a way to protect himself and his beloved Lydia from them. Interesting adventure, given that it was written long before the current glut of vampire lore. I will be interested to see how the adventure continues in the next book, Traveling with the dead.
