recommended for: goths, novel readers
I'm not sure what I think about The Keep, or better said, I'm not quite sure what to do with it yet. This is what I do know: I don't know a thing about crystal meth, and this is the second book I've read this year that touches on the topic--synchronicity.
I found the main character Danny completely unbelievable, all because Egan mentions fleetingly that he arrived at the castle in a goth getup. I wasn't sure the whole time whether the baroness was real or a ghost--and I'm still not sure. I don't believe for a second that Danny got it on with her. I had no idea who the narrator was until the very end, which was a pleasant surprise. And I really liked the side story of Ray and Holly's unrequited love. But all these questions/doubts are really what made the book fun.
The book's structure, especially the cut-ins and cut-outs to different characters and the jail sessions with convicts reading their works (sigh, those sections read nearly like my first undergrad creative writing clas...more
