Amazingly, Rousseau's fetish for being spanked and exposing himself in alleyways are not the most intriguing things in this book.

Modern Hermeneut It was presumably after reading The Confessions that Freud -- as I recently learned -- diagnosed Rousseau as a paranoid schizophrenic. The great psychiatrist compared the Frenchman favorably (or unfavorably, depending on your perspective) to his patient, Carl Liebman, a repressed gay Yalie who was convinced that ejaculation constituted genocide against his "spermanimalcules."
