this book came along in the perfect time of my life. Recommended.

Full review: This was great. I loved it. I really did. I'm almost tempted to give it a full 5 stars. Perhaps it's because I find the Booker Prize winners to often be a struggle, but for what ever reason, this book just grabbed me. It was funny, it was sardonic, and Edith's private life bemused me almost as much as it bemused her.

Edith's observations of the guests at the Hotel, and her observations and recountings of her own 'scandal' are great. It came along at the perfect time for me, in it's recounting of passion, secrecy, longing, and ultimately the conclusion that sometimes to be happy in love, you've got to be selfish as hell. Or at least try to look out for number one...

Without a huge emotional investment, one can do whatever one pleases. One can take decisions, change one's mind, alter one's plans... One can be as pleasant or as ruthless as one wants.'"
