As I've struggled through term papers and exams this semester, I occasionally needed to read something that wasn't assigned, that I don't have to write on, but that was artful enough not to bring me down. I've had the ebook version of this sitting on my hard drive for probably years, and about a week ago I finally opened it. There are a lot of things to like about this book.

It's not as ambitious as Middlesex, but that's not necessarily a fault. This was sort of lovely and sad and somehow ephemeral, amorphous. Eugenides has a dexterity with words that's really wonderful to read; his prose is lithe, and he sketches really beautifully. I admit that I'm biased by the book's setting, but the details about it that he includes are interestingly and exactly chosen. So glad that I finally read this one.
