Bill I don't know. Maybe it's like quitting smoking: the more times you try, the more likely you are to succeed. Good luck.

Laura But why continue to try? There are vast numbers of great books to read -- there's little sense in pushing yourself through a book, or an author, you've tried multiple times and who's not doing it for you. Pynchon isn't broccoli; you don't have to force him down because someone said he's good for you.

(FWIW, I don't blame you for not being able to get through Vineland; I tried and in the 75 pages or so I read before I pitched the thing across the room, I didn't run across a single worthwhile sentence.)

Jenni There's something about his prose that doesn't settle well with me. I'm sure it's a matter of personal taste.
