** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed The Price of Salt, a lesbian romance from 1952. Unlike every other similar book of the age, it actually has a positive and hopeful ending, although not the gushing happy ending of a hetero-romance novel. While I wanted to edit a lot of the book as it read a bit too much like a screenplay where I needed an actor's eyes and movement to flesh out the emotion a little, the writing was clean and at times wonderful. But mostly it was an incredibly courageous depiction of two women in love. At several points I had to stop and shake my head in amazement that the book WAS published at all.
