This has been on my "to read" list for a long time. I'm glad I finally picked it up. Hattie is a spunky orphan who finally gets the chance to claim some place as "home" when her uncle leaves her his homestead claim in Eastern Montana. She has nine months to prove up--set 480 rods of fence (that's seven thousand nine hundred and twenty feet) and cultivate 1/8th of the claim, or forty acres. Told in third person narrative, with snippets from Hattie's letters to a friend fighting on the Western Front of World War I, Larson's story captures the grit of an early twentieth century western homesteader. A terrific read for fans of historical fiction.
