Read in March, 2008

This is a thoroughly delightful and brilliant book. I chuckled and chortled all the way through this book; it’s hilarious. There are many interesting characters and I am eager to read the rest of this series. I’m not sure that the successive books will also get 5 stars from me: the clever premise might get a tad old; I’ll have to see. This unusual story is a bit difficult to define. It fits multiple genres: sci-fi, mystery, humor, fantasy, and fiction. And the author manages to create an entire alternate world, which is something I often enjoy in books when it’s done well, and it’s done exceedingly well here, and with a lot of whimsy. I am now a Jasper Fforde fan: he really pulled off a unique feat in creating this book/series. I suspect I missed some of the references as I have gaps in my knowledge of England and of literature, but I caught enough of the inside jokes to be entertained. I especially enjoyed the portions of the book that were told with Thursday’s voice. (For some reason I kept feeling as though Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone was in Back to the Future. Anyway, it was all a great deal of fun.)

Although I loved the book, I suspect that this book is not for everybody. My guess is that a reader would have had to enjoy at least one book from each of the genres listed above to enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Doug Lisa,

Your review was Wonderful! We have a group set up to discuss the novels of Jasper Fforde - Please join in...it would be lovely to have you...:)doug

Lisa Vegan Doug, Thanks. Great book, huh?! I noticed your group. But, should I join when I still have most of the books left to read? What about spoilers?

Doug Lisa,

Actually, I can't think of any real spoilers of the novels. The discussion, pretty sparse so far, has been on general topics around the novels, order to read the novels, and some minor speculation on future novels by FForde. I hope your weekend has been wonderful!...:)Doug

Lisa Vegan Doug, I'll think about it then. At one point here I was a member of lots of groups; I've let most of them go because the emails are too long and I like seeing my book club group in the first 5, but we don't post a lot so it's rarely there when I have too many groups.

I'll look at the group and if I want to post at some point, I'll join. You do so much to contribute to Goodreads: I've seen that you've started multiple groups for authors' works. So, you might see me there.

I'm off to my book club meeting a bit later today.

I hope that you enjoy the rest of the day.

Lisa Vegan Ok. I joined. It looks interesting. Thanks for inviting me.

Doug Lisa,

I am glad you joined. As I mentioned, it is a small, but growing group - And, I think like most groups there are a flurry of posts, then nothing for awhile.

I still need to figure out how to edit/combine books so that I can become an effective Librarian. I had plans to do that, when I became a Goodreads Librarian...but, I didn't make the time. I am sure once I do figure it out, I will spend some time combining. I really appreciate Goodreads. It is such a great resource....:)Doug

Lisa Vegan Hi Doug,

There is a librarians manual:

http://www.goodreads.com/help/librarian

and you can also post to the GR librarians group and get a lot of help:

http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/2...

I'm also happy to answer any questions you have. It is fun to combine and clean up things here. I do it mostl to help Goodreads but the librarian tasks can be fun (and addictive), although I've done a lot of work recently, and it did take up some of the time I would have had to read.

But, even if you don't want to do a lot of work, it's very helpful to be able to combine books/authors as you see errors. Sometimes on my friends' update feed I'll see a rating of a book that I know I've rated but it doesn't look as though I've rated it; I then know that book has editions that need combining, or an author's name is spelled incorrectly in one of the editions, or something else is wrong, and I'll go in and fix that. It can be very gratifying.

Lisa Vegan Re the Jasper Fforde group, I did subscribe to the digest. I'll be more likely to participate more if I see a post to which I have something else to add, AND when I have read another book or two in the series. Fine with me if it's slow at times. I think all these author based discussion groups are slow, except for maybe the Harry Potter group - I used to belong to that one, but the posts were just too numerous.

Doug Lisa,

I agree on the slowness - sometimes, it is refeshing not to be overwhelmed by new messages in a group. :)Doug

Doug Lisa,

Thank you! I will take a look at the Librarians manual, so that I can begin to combine editions - I will have plenty of work just combining the multiple editions I have on my list. :)doug

Lisa Vegan Doug, Some of your duplicates are probably already combined in the system. In order to find duplicates on your shelves, go up to your books, then go to edit view, then click on find duplicates. Then you can delete which duplicates you have.

I'm still learning how to do things here. There are so many features & options & things one can do.

message 12: by Doug (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doug Lisa,

Thanks again, I did that and got rid of some duplicates - but I know I have quite a few more. I do plan on getting to work on them...Doug

Sfdreams OK, Lisa, you've finally convinced me!! After your numerous emails about this book, reading this review made me want to read it!

Thanks!

Thank you, Laura. I really loved this book, and love the series.

Laura I'm so glad to hear you enjoy the whole series as well. I just started my first by him, Shades of Grey, and I'm enjoying it so much that I may go into a little bit of a Fforde phase for awhile. I love his humor! It's so hard to find really good humorous books, I think.

message 19: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Vegan Laura, Oh, I loved that book too, but I haven't read any of the sequels yet.

message 20: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) Totally agree with your review. Funny, I, and Ron's nephew, was telling his twin sister she had to read his work.

I don't think they've been published yet. I believe the second is due out in '15! So I hope I like his other series. (Not sure how to pluralize that. Serieses?! lol)

Hi, Dawn!!! Glad to see you online.

Lisa Vegan Laura, Oh, I'm glad I'm not behind.

message 24: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) Thanks, Lisa, we came back onto GR a couple of weeks ago. And we just returned from a family wedding/vacation to Northern California. The wedding was bittersweet due to the recent death in Ron's family but once we all got passed those feelings we had a wonderful whirlwind trip.

message 25: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Vegan I'm glad you had a nice trip, Dawn. Where in CA were you?

I'm not on GR quite as frequently, but have spurts when I'm on.

message 26: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) We landed in Oakland, stayed in Livermore, then in Placerville, where the wedding was held. Then we all went on the honeymoon with the newlyweds, going to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and San Francisco, then flying out of Oakland. I have to admit I had a hope we might have heard from you before we left or while we were there just in case we were close enough to meet.

message 27: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Vegan Dawn, Well, I didn't know you were here. Yes, most of those locations are close to me, particularly San Francisco, Oakland, and Livermore. Were you here when we had our weird rain?

I thought you were up that way. We did think of you when we were there. We arrived just in time for the heat wave, thank you very much LOL. We were out your way for about 10 days so we got to enjoy your regular temps but don't remember any weird rain. We even caught a ballgame between the Giants and Dodgers.

Laura, I can't express how much we missed our friends and the GR environment. At times we felt we were being robbed.

message 30: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Vegan Oh, yeah, the heat wave was awful. The unusual rain came shortly before it. Lucky you! It's hard to get Giants-Dodgers games tickets.

Glad to see you back here!!! Happy readings...

message 32: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) Lisa, we have enough rain here, so glad we missed it. Matter of fact I don't remember any rain while there.

The groom's family lives in Livermore and Auburn. They were able to arrange tickets for 8 of us, all on the same row!

Here is someone you have probably missed; this is how Spats reacted when we got home,

message 33: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Vegan Awww. Gosh I love Spats. Just as cute as ever!

Laura They always miss us when we travel for some time.

message 35: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura Yeah, and then they go back to their standoffish selves, lol. ((((Cats))))

message 36: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) Spats doesn't know what standoffish means, we sometimes wish he did. That is why we say he is more like a dog.

You should see his antics when we are trying to pack a suitcase. He does everything he can to prolong the process.

Glad all of you enjoyed your Spats fix :~)

Lisa Vegan Dawn, I love dogs and velcro cats. ;-)

That's sweet, Dawn. Penny is my reading buddy. She is a lap cat. All I have to say is "Is it time to read, Pen?" and she'll follow me anywhere so she can plop down. And she's been known to jump in luggage!

Your Spats is a beautiful cat.

Ha-ha, love that phrase and we will have to steal that from you, that describes Spats to a T. He even clings on as you try to get up.

BTW, he had his 15th birthday on May 1st. Can you believe it?!

He thanks you and gladly soaks up all praise. Spats and one of our other cats, Topaz, are our 'book' cats, they even rub all over them. Except Spats decides that the book is taking too much attention from him and he forces his way between you and your book. And just giving him scratches with one hand and holding the book with the other will not suffice with this fella.

Laura, I missed the picture of Penny, I tried to look from my cell phone earlier in the week but it was only the small photo and couldn't enlarge it. Was she laying on her back looking up at you (love when they do that). Love your new photos, the double rainbow, quilt square and profile picture (awesome shot).

Thanks! Spats got his name because he looks like he is wearing old fashioned Spats. The rest of our furry kids can be seen from our profile page.
