I read this book immediately after Richard Powers's In The Time Of Our Singing and spent the first three chapters thinking this was fiction. Heidi Hart's delicate prose certainly lends itself to that.

In reality this is a quiet, contemplative, yet taut memoir of coming to terms with an emotionally void childhood, an early marriage, and a strict Mormon faith. Unlike some contemporary ex-Mormon writers she doesn't rebel, but explores the root of her disquiet and finds ways to grow. The memoir is very memoir-y, in that some storylines meander a bit self-indulgently. But it does make the reader all the more appreciative that the author is holding her heart so open in sharing this story.
