The Elves of Cintra (The Genesis of Shannara, Book 2) by Terry Brooks
I know. It's a fantasy novel. But Brooks is my favorite current fantasy writer. His epics compare to Tolkien's (and Tolkien is my main inspiration as a writer). This book is the second of three novels bringing the Shannara stories together with the Knight of the Word stories, basically telling the reader the origin of the Shannara world. I'm flying through it, which means I'm enjoying it. Brooks is a great storyteller and character-creator; my only gripe with him is his tendency toward unattractive character names at times. Oh well. Not that much of a deterrent. It's the story and the characters that make the book(s) fun to read (just like Tolkien did, but in today's modern style). I'd recommend this book and all the Shannara/Knight of the Word books to anyone who loves fantasy fiction.
