** spoiler alert ** The Amish way of life is the backdrop for this murder mystery/court drama novel. The author seems to have throughly researched the novel by actually living with an Amish family for a while, and like Ellie comes to know the Amish way of life by living it. For all most of us know the accounts of the life of the Amish are accurate because I don't think any Amish would be sitting around surfing the net, reading books and debating the book's merits or shortcomings on Goodreads. Do any of us know an Amish person to ask? I don't. Lets just say I believed the characters of the Amish family. Picoult succeeds in keeping my attention with her character development and making them believeable. The plots and sub plots seem to flow naturally into each other so that it seems like I am watching the story unfold.The end is where a lot of Picoult fans have said she is lacking in excellence.
