David Small's Stitches: A Memoir is a real shot to the gut. I had a hard time with this at first -- as a memoir, you keep asking yourself, could all of this happen to one person? To call Small's family dysfunctional --chock full of devastating guilty secrets, emotionally dead parents, and horrific medical catastrophes -- is like calling an angry mob a sewing circle. But in the end, the story make a turn with two simple words: "I didn't." I'll let you find out how those words made all the difference.

Small's excellent watercolor drawings belie the depth of emotion seething under the surface, perfectly in sync with the minimal text. A heartbreaking, emotional book.
