French is competent with the mechanics of the crime novel's page turning plot, but this book is a bit of a mess. Very much a first novel. The characters are not especially well drawn; the narrator, despite his interesting childhood trauma and the hint that he might be an unreliable narrator, mostly comes off as a dick, and sort of a dim one at that. The central premise is rather clunky and requires a hefty dose of suspension of disbelief. The cinematic influences, and aspirations, are too evident and the prose itself is not especially compelling. With a couple more drafts the good book lurking in here somewhere might have been uncovered.
