I enjoyed reading Beach Trip: A Novel by Cathy Holton, and for the most part I enjoyed the characters she created, though to some extent, perhaps because of the flash-back style storyline, I felt as though some aspects of the four friends lacked believability.
Mel was the least believable character, particularly because she seems to be a feminist who advocates not needing family money (though she admits she does need it and the support of her multiple husbands to launch her writing career), and then she pushes Lola into a loveless marriage with Briggs? Was it because of latent selfishness? Was she ultimately jealous of Lola honestly valuing love over money?
I had been expecting that ending, though I had been hoping that it was Lonnie who Lola wound run off with, so having it not be Lonnie made it more believable--more about growing up, moving on, and the honest pursuit of happiness in the here and now.
Overall an interesting read.
