Fiction A-Z Book 'Z': The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

There are enough other reviews here that people can find out what the story is about without my help. All I'll say is that this book is beautiful and devastating, with fantastic characters used in a setting that is well-worn, but well-explored here.

Zusak is a clever and empathetic writer. He has a great grasp of language, and crafts great descriptions and turns of phrase ("Those souls are always light because more of them have been put out").

Thanks to my Dad for the recommendation.

And on that note, what was supposed to have been my summer experiment, and stretched to this, the last day of 2009, is concluded. Fiction A-Z was a great experience for me. Only 5 of the 26 books were less than 3-star entries, and that many again received 5 stars. There are quite a few authors I'll come back to (which was the point of the whole thing to begin with), and even one I got into personal contact with. There are always new literary worlds to explore, and I'm very glad to have spent this half a year doing just that.
