Out of the Pocket is the story of a high school football star, who is outed by his school newspaper, just as he is beginning to come out. While the book's agenda-driven plot is welcome, important and interesting, the writing just isn't as strong as I wanted it to be. The story is told from the main character's p.o.v., but he lacks a distinctive voice, and the plot bogs down at times in sentimentality. The author, a gay AP sports writer, clearly knows his subject well, and both the world of high school football and being a gay teen ring true. FYI: the story is very chaste: he gets his first kiss.
