I ended up buying this book because of one scene between Sami Yazdan, a first-generation Iranian-American, and his mother Maryam. He tells a table full of dinner guests about his mother's arranged marriage with no concept of how humiliating and dismissive his actions are. When Maryam escapes to the kitchen, she thinks:

"When Kiyan had told her, for instance, that her hair smelled like an Armenian church: what could Sami know about that?"
