really liked it

I liked this book. The plot and characters are somewhat typical, though Nix does well with his less-is-more approach. The way he write the internal and external dialogues of the characters lends mystery, weight, and substance to the characterizations. Nothing is overdone. The magic is intriguing. It is written very well, in that not too much exposition is wasted on it - it just happens, and the reader is left to figure out what it means. I quite like this approach.

As for the storyline, it is somewhat predictable, but not trite. The main character is strong, but not quite as relatable as say, Robin McKinley's heroines in her similar YA fantasy books (Hero and the Crown, Blue Sword).

All in all, a good book and I plan to read Lirael next.
