I think it's difficult to write a sympathetic earnest character, but Toibin has done very well. I also enjoyed the subtle shifts in prose between the protagonists's experiences in Ireland and the US. It's not often that you see a change not only in the nature of the dialogue, but a change in the third person narrative.

I was expecting this book to be just another immigrant experience novel, but it takes some interesting twists and turns. I was left wondering what kind of quiet power Father Flood is wielding on two continents.
