** spoiler alert ** This novel has the group pitched into a crazy parallel universe trap raising philosophical questions much as in his novel_Eye in the Sky_, yet I think the characterizations developed very slowly and so did my concern for them. Also, though some of the philosophical questions are interesting--what is the nature of being, the nature of time, our relationship with inanimate objects and technologies (matter), is the creator of the universe a sadistic child, etc.--, I didn't feel they were as potent or interesting as those of _Eye in the Sky_ which had lessons about the nature and differences of individual perception. Something about _Ubik_ just kept making me compare the two novels...
The idea of precogs vs. precogs, or precogs verse nullification precogs, was to me an interesting precursor of present time stories or TV such as "Heroes".
Don't get me wrong, _Ubik_ certainly feels original--quite different than anything I have ever read--even with its similarities to _Eye in the Sky_. Much of this is owing to its very surreal mood and setting--quite an achievement in its self.
Trademark, PKD advertisements you'll love/hate and "one day we will be paying for air" aspects abound ad absurdum---.
Some of Dick's novels seem incompletely fleshed out, as if only islands of a reality were all he could realize on paper--yet in this book, of course, it fits perfectly well into the solipsistic world of Jory.
