Independent Reading 2nd-3rd grade

Osbourne truly engages the imagination of her readers in the fiction paperback series “The Magic Tree House”. She uses a colorful cover page to peak the interest of the students as in the first book of the series, “Dinosaurs Before Dark”. The expressions on the faces of the children, smoke bellowing from the volcanoes in the background, and the detail that is captured in the image of the Pteranodon makes you feel as though you were standing there to take the picture. Osbourne also added black and white drawings throughout the story to give the young reader visual support to the text. The chapters contain a mixture of simple and challenging vocabulary to help transition the reader. All the while she is using dialogue and short sentences that allows for a consistent flow through each chapter. Children will relate to this paperback series because the characters are curious, skeptical, and adventurous. The book also adds a little bit of magic which definitely appeals to this age group.

Science/ History

Lesson Plan: Science- A matching worksheet where the students are to connect the dinosaur bones to the correct dinosaur. Label each dinosaur a herbivore or a carnivore.
