The King of Attolia (Eugenides, Book 3) by Megan Whalen Turner
Although this book is the third (and best) in a series, the twists and turns of this tale are decipherable, and enjoyable, without the background of the previous two books. It stands on its own. In fact, I read this book first and thoroughly enjoyed the "surprises" revealed since the characters were all new to me. The characters and political intrigue elevate this novel beyond the adolescent level to adults as well.
Eugenides, Thief of Eddis, just married the Queen of the neighboring kingdom, Attolia, and things are not going well. At least, that’s what Costis, a member of the Queen’s elite guard, observes. Hated by the Attolian guards, mocked by the court, ignored by the queen, and laughed at by the populace, Eugenides’ life is miserable and in danger. Could anyone really expect more from this union, considering the queen had once overseen the amputation of this former thief’s right hand?
