This book is about a soldier returning from the war who has forgotten about his beautiful cutlured wife, and remembers only his first sweetheart, a poor girl now married to someone else.

I adored this book. I didn't expect to, it is described in some blurb on the front as "witty and entertaining" which put me off a little. I did not particularly find the book as witty, I found it sharply observed. And it was a little chilling. The moral behind the story is very contemporary - can money, class, ornaments make one person worth more than another? The books says no.
