Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman

** spoiler alert **
When I read his book, I was a bit unsure about the person in question, Pat Tillman. I thought he was just another macho jock type that would have stuffed people like me into lockers at the local high school. However, I find Pat Tillman to be a strong free thinker and a compelling figure as a soldier. He started to be more of a reader after jail and a person who put a lot of thoughts in his choices. I find the author Jon Krakauer to be a writer of same concept for he was hard on both presidents for downplaying the 1993 World Trade Center attack and the 911 attack that the president of that kept ignoring until it was too late.
It was a study of the hurtful truth of fog of war in which sometimes the good guys accidentally shoot each other in the war against terrorism and the disappointing actions of military higher ups who tried to cover up fraticide. Regardless of how Pat Tillman died, he is still a hero because he took part in defending our rights against the terrorists instead of just venting to the press about wanting to murder Osama bin Laden with his bare hands like his pro football counterparts.
I was not really satisfied with the author failing to question why the military allowed two brothers to serve on the same unit, becaue I believe that Pat Tillman made his own misjudgement and went up the hill becaues he was fearful of his brother being caught into the ambush from the Taliban enemy soldiers. But I agree with the lead soldier, Lieutenant Uthlaut, that it was an operation fubar from the beginning and they should have waited for the humvee to be repaired or towed instead of splitting the platoon to follow some bullshit progress deadline set by Rumfield. If the soldiers were going to be in Afghanistan in the long run, they might as well take the time to be careful.

Good review, Patrick. I love Krakauer's Into the Wild and Into Thin Air, but was hesitant about reading this because I'm not big into war stories, which is weird because I truly do value and admire the men and women who risk their lives to keep us ALL safe. Jack Nicholson's you-need-me-on-that-wall speech was the best thing about A Few Good Men. :)I do agree with you on Tillman walking the walk and not just talking the talk like so many others in this country do.
I'm going to put this on my TBR list.
Thanks!
