Becky's review
Schooled by Gordon Korman
Again, I'm the girl who cried 5 stars. But I really liked this one, and it booktalks itself: Capricorn Anderson, homeschooled on a hippie farm commune, is plonked down in the middle of 8th grade public school after his grandmother, Rain, falls out of a plum tree and breaks her hip. Arriving with uncut hair, tie-dyed shirt, cornhusk sandals, and no experience with pizza, wedgies, TV, or other people, Capricorn's innocence and purity are put to the test as he is given the "honor" of becoming the 8th grade class president (a position secretly reserved for the biggest loser in school).
I really liked reading the different points of view in this story, as well as Cap's unrelenting goodness. He puts me in mind of Stargirl and Emma-Jean Lazarus, and a little bit of Inspector Clouseau (with a pure heart, you can bungle your way to the top no matter what). There were some laugh-out-loud funny moments. Highly recommended!
