See the footnote on page 351:

"Jefferson consistently misspelled Clark's name" [as Clarke:].
Come on, Ambrose, this isn't a "misspelling" it's just a variation, and a footnote like this doesn't give the reader proper historical context.

Now that I'm off my soapbox, it was pretty great, after I got into it (which took about 250 pages). I love the West, and so this was a compelling story of their travels.
