Harry Turtledove has said that the Napoleonic Wars are very difficult for a fiction writer to take on. This is because it is often unclear who exactly the bad guy was and what precisely was being fought for. Novik handles this era seemingly effortlessly and does so by inserting dragons into the military weaponry of the time. Her outstanding military knowledge and skilled writing bring the story to life very quickly and within a few pages, you might just forget that there have never actually been dragons in the military. If you enjoy this book, the series is still bring written (currently at five titles) and Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) has purchased the film rights and is holding them for future interest.
