This is a much easier translation than the Bailly translation, which I wouldn't recommend. Back when I first read Hegel, the Bailly translation, The Phenomenology of Mind, is all we had. I prepped for this by reading Marcuse's Reason and Revolution, Dunayevskaya's Marxism and Freedom and followed it up by reading Marx's 1844 manuscripts and Kant's Critique of Pure Reason
