This is Rawi's first published novel. I know Rawi from being a starving artist, so I bought the book out of solidarity. It sat on the shelf for a long time, then I picked it up. Wow, he can really write! This is a very visual book - I felt I was watching a movie about the story the whole time while reading it.

The novel is in the first person about a Lebanese petty criminal during the bloody civil war, who is only a little more ethical than a shithead. Just barely.
He and his buddy are riding around Beirut on their motorcycle, reluctantly tending to family business, girlfriends, and larceny. Things go from bad to worse, and they have to make some decisions.

Really engaging slice of life, and a well deserved winner of the Governor General's literary prize.
