I just read this aloud to my fourth grade classes. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are a bit over the top, but in this particular instance that adds to the charm of the story.

A solid Newbery winner, this is a great book for middle elementary graders. The chapters are short, with most only being three or four pages long. It is fun and unintimidating to kids just starting to explore reading more than picture books or early easy chapter books.

The kids laughed at the antics of the naughty prince and we all wanted to cheer for the brillance of Jemmy, the whipping boy.

Heroes, villians, chases, adventure, a trip through a dark rat infested sewer and even a dancing bear. What's not to love?
